Marine Cleared in Haditha Killings - U.S. - CBN News

CBNNews.com - CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - The Marine Corps is dropping all charges against a lance corporal who was accused of involuntary manslaughter in a squad's killing of 24 Iraqis in Haditha in 2005. The Marines dropped the case against 26-year-old Lance Cpl. Stephen Tatum on Friday as jury selection was about to begin for his court-martial at Camp Pendleton. He had also been charged with reckless endangerment and aggravated assault. The case against Tatum stemmed from a squad's assault in response to a roadside bombing of a convoy that killed one Marine and wounded two others. The government says a sergeant and another Marine shot five men at the scene and the squad leader ordered his men to clear homes with grenades and gunfire. The government has been seeking Tatum's testimony against Staff Sgt. Frank Wuterich of Meriden, Conn.

The time that is spent by teens online is actually rather limited, with 12 to 17 year olds spending, on average, only 13 hours per week on the Internet (compared to a weekly average of 19 hours for online adults), and that number has not increased since Ipsos last measured online teen behaviour in 2004. There are at least a couple of factors that might account for the relatively little time teens spend on online. One is the influence of parents on teens’ Internet use – over one-half (54%) of online teens surveyed reported that their parents place time limits or curfews on when they can access the Internet. The other is that only a minority of teens (37%) agree that using the Internet is an important part of their day (compared to 51% of adults).

A sprint towards normalcy: Iraqi children take on field meet - Vox

AL QA’IM, Iraq (Jan. 27, 2008) – Children flocked from every corner of the village when the Marines and sailors from Company I of Task Force 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 5, rolled into town. The kids are always curious as to what Coalition Forces are doing in their quaint village at the T-1 pumping station in Iraq, but this day was different. This day was for them. Marines began setting up at the village soccer field for a long-day of food and fun dedicated to the children. Nearly 300 children began to fill the bleachers, gossiping to one another as to what was in store. The field meet kicked off, and cheers and laughter soon echoed through the village. Both boys and girls would participate in events ranging from a soccer challenge to a potato sack race. “If you were a kid, wouldn’t you just want to have fun while growing up and not worry about stepping on a mine while walking to school or having your school shot up because insurgents are using the rooftop,” said Cpl. Evan Van Nosrand, a vehicle commander with Company I of Task Force 3rd Bn., 2nd Marines. “It’s something we take for granted while growing up back in the states; to actually enjoy growing up.” The aroma from the barbeques permeated through the cool air as the first event was announced over the loud speaker. Children, broken down into various age groups of boys and girls, raced to the starting line for the 100-meter dash. The immense crowd’s chanting and the possibility of winning a prize were all the children needed to spark friendly competition. “I’m going to win,” said an excited 8-year old Iraqi boy. “I want to win a prize for my baby sister.” The event couldn’t have been possible without the local support of the Iraqi Police and the Iraqi Army.

For babies born at 23 weeks the survival rate increased from 44 per cent in 1991-95 to 46 per cent in the late 1990s. At 24 weeks, half the babies born between 1991 and 1995 lived. This rose to 81 per cent for those born in 1995-2000.

The Encyclopedia Britannica defines terrorism as "the systematic use of violence to create a general climate of fear in a population and thereby to bring about a particular political objective." What distinguishes terrorism from conventional warfare is the degree to which its efforts are focused on creating public panic. While conventional military forces also make frequent use of psychological warfare, including acts of terror and various forms of propaganda, they seek to achieve victory principally through strength of arms. Terrorists, by contrast, often believe that they cannot win the battle by sheer force of arms because they are fighting a technologically and militarily superior foe. Thus they focus their efforts on covert actions designed to strike the constant fear of unpredictable violence into the hearts of all - particularly civilians. This has led some social scientists to refer to terrorism as the "weapon of the weakest." Attacking civilians has been the methodology, for example, of the thousands of Palestinians who have murdered and maimed Israeli men, women, and children in crowded markets, schools, restaurants, train stations, plazas, nightclubs, and buses, among other places. These terrorists pursue their political goals by striving to make life unbearable for the population at large - and thereby winning political concessions. In some cases, of course, terrorism is a tool of the mighty - such as when it has been the official policy of totalitarian states like Hitler's Nazi Germany and Stalin's Soviet Union. Those states used unjustified arrest, imprisonment, torture, and execution to create a climate of intense fear, and to encourage subservience to the declared political, social, and economic goals of the state.
